 * I would like to apologize in advance if this post offends any Gujarati or Bihari. I don’t even understand such distinctions. In fact I don’t consider myself an Indian but a global citizen. Gujarati , Bihari , Indian , Pakistani – these are just figments of our imagination

rich dadddy poor daddyBihar is an enigma for me. Growing up in Delhi, I thought Bihar is a really poor state where people are dumb and good enough only for menial jobs in the big city. Don’t blame me.  I was an impressionable kid who was told that all these rickshawallas are bihari thugs and as a kid I should be careful. Growing up I came across lot of half way and fully educated Biharis. I realized that these people are definitely not dumb. They are cheap, horny, perverted , sly , political minded (hey don’t blame me but this is the sample at least I have come across , I know I should not generalize) but very hard working and sharp ( I emphasize the point, that there may be a sampling error). Now, if Biharis are hard working and sharp and on top of that sly; I could not understand why Bihar remains such a poor state. continue reading…

snowballFirst things first; this book is about 1000 pages. So, you may think that by completing the mammoth task of finishing this book you will accomplish the mammoth task of understanding Warren Buffett. After all he is a business man and not some complicated artist and Warren himself has always made things easy to understand. But the thing about Warren Buffett is that he is easy to understand for a beginner, but has profound depth that will continue to amaze an “expert”.

bhagatI became a big fan of Chetan Bhagat when I first read 5 point someone. He was able to quickly connect to the readers most of them being engineers, I am not sure about rest of them. He tried to address a different set of crowd with one night at call center but that was like leap from reality. Ok, I know FPS had some really no- realistic incidents like falling from roof top and surviving and what not, but still my entertainment starved soul could bear that.

predictably-irrationalI for one, have always been skeptical of human nature. A book which shows that how we are irrational and not just irrational but systematically irrational, obviously fills me with joy. They prove it by a series of experiments in a control environment and that has been attacked by economists who say that human beings are rational and if they act irrationally in a control environment of a lab test – it doesn’t prove anything.  continue reading…

Lot of times you see that superstar athletes retire with their millions and start a fashionable business. I have no idea about the statistics but I am willing to bet that there would be more failures than success (compared to the average population) in their endeavors. continue reading…

To be fair she can get lot of young people interested in that drab subject – philosophy. The reputation of her books irks me so much that I decided to study proper philosophy to write a brilliant critique of this pathetic author. continue reading…

Guess the two words which make management students contort their faces with disgust – vision and mission. This is one of the books which define vision and mission and having read a scholarly paper by the authors I decided to delve deeper into these definitions without any personal bias .This book incidently was a major success in the 90s and even the likes of harvard business review and Wall Street Journal had many positive commentaries on the book. I decided, I would not be biased by that also. So I read the book hoping that I will atleast take some positive things from a major success, even if I largely disapprove of it – but alas !!!

They say a great book can change your entire outlook of life. I have never yet experienced that with any of the classics but the work of literature I keep coming back to is this reasonably good play. This play is one of the reasons I got interested in literature in the first place. continue reading…
