“Dear friend,

I am very sorry and sympathetic to you as you have to pay a huge tuition fee and part of which will go for business research.

But you know what, it is the way of looking into things that’s different between you ( or normal MBA s) and researchers ( Phd s). continue reading…

snowballFirst things first; this book is about 1000 pages. So, you may think that by completing the mammoth task of finishing this book you will accomplish the mammoth task of understanding Warren Buffett. After all he is a business man and not some complicated artist and Warren himself has always made things easy to understand. But the thing about Warren Buffett is that he is easy to understand for a beginner, but has profound depth that will continue to amaze an “expert”.

Remember the Tom Sawyer story in which Tom convinces a bunch of neighbourhood kids, what a delight it is to meaninglessly paint fences for a paltry reward. In the recruitment season, at B schools every gonna be  wanna be recruiter tells the job seeker how much he loves his company. And how much he hated his previous job. And how it will be great if the wanna be MBAs join him and see it for themselves. He is of course on a quest to be a great salesman. Forever testing the sample audience against his previous conversion rate. But is there something more to his “lies”. continue reading…

What is your client’s budget.Seems obvious that this information has to be the starting point. It is an obvious rookie mistake. continue reading…

Guess the two words which make management students contort their faces with disgust – vision and mission. This is one of the books which define vision and mission and having read a scholarly paper by the authors I decided to delve deeper into these definitions without any personal bias .This book incidently was a major success in the 90s and even the likes of harvard business review and Wall Street Journal had many positive commentaries on the book. I decided, I would not be biased by that also. So I read the book hoping that I will atleast take some positive things from a major success, even if I largely disapprove of it – but alas !!!

Before Chetan Bhagat started the unfortunate trend of every wannabe- gonna-be- churning out a book about his campus, this was the only “campus book” I could see in the stores. It is not a fiction but a fictionalized account of author’s ordeal at Stanford to obtain an MBA. But although informative for an aspirant , this author clearly has his own biases and complexes. continue reading…

I once asked a friend, who has recently returned from Darden with an MBA; what is management all about. He said “Oh that is simple! It is about money”. My mind was on some other track and I said, “very few engineering graduates understand what engineering is about and very few MBAs understand what management is all about”. Sensing my mood, he became serious and said, “I will tell you what it is all about”, he gathered his thoughts, stood up and said, “Optimization of resources is what it is all about”. continue reading…
