cmtmnt and consistency

I recently watched the academy award winning movie Shakespeare in Love. I realized, even a half way decent period movie can end up winning awards and that explains why Ashutosh Goowatrikar made Chodah Akbar ( sorry a typo),  so he can win some more awards and blow his horn a little more. We have all seen how much he loves blowing it – his horn, I meant. continue reading…

coco_avant_chanel_smokingSo, Saint Valentine day massacre is here again. All you husbands, lovers , boyfriends and wannabe’s would be forced, coerced or manipulated into buying gifts. Or maybe you are aware that women feel enormous pressure to give away their modesty once they have accepted an expensive gift and want to try out that theory. Whatever be the reasons, many of you would be hunting for gifts in the world which is truly the devils workshop – the fashion world. You would come across this high end luxury brand – chanel and would silently curse the company and buy one of its product. continue reading…

Or maybe it was Janta Ki Adalat. Anyways it was the one with Rajat Sharma as the host. Or janata’s lawyer. Aamir Khan has all the qualities that I would usually admire. For on, he makes good movies. The questions thrown at Aamir were that he is arrogant, crazy, control freak , doesn’t like other movies of bollywood and Aamir Khan handled them with aplomb. He was poked on his tiff with Shahrukh Khan and if he has ghost directed many movies. He was mostly tactful and sometimes blunt. continue reading…

Oyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!

Due to my Delhi upbringing, I was pretty liberal with the use of the word oye when I initially landed in Kharagpur, Bengal. But soon I realized that oye is somewhat offensive to Bengalis. So I started using Dada for the rickshaw wallas and chai wallas. There is quite a cultural gap between Punjab and Bengal. So I was surprised that the director of this movie which has the Punjabi underbelly of West delhi as one of its inspiration – is a Bengali.

500DaysOfSummer_000Chutiya !!!

There are some words in hindi which don’t have any parallel  in any other language. The best example is panga. Another is chutiya. I seriously doubt, if there is another curse word in any other language which fits so beautifully in so many different situations. The lead character in this movie is nothing but a chutiya. continue reading…

frontYou don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender

-Marlon Brando as Terry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrq96cW2BuY

Americans are very fond of lists such as top 100 this or top 20 that. And whenever they make a list of top Hollywood  quotes of all time, this one invariably finds its place. Apart from the fact that it was Brando delivering it, the reason for its immortality is that we often feel like saying in life– I could have been a contender. But essentially this is nothing but self pitying and won’t get you or Brando anywhere. continue reading…

kateDamn !!! .

I don’t remember the last time I saw a movie so serious. And  I watch a lot of serious cinema. Seriousness is sort of a given with anything to do with the Nazis but you can lace it with humor or satire. But this movie tops the morbidness  that comes with the holocaust with a devastating affair between a 15 year old boy and 30 something woman. Its like they say in hindi – “ ek to karela upar se neem chada continue reading…

StreetcarNamedDesire[1]+(2)Oh it’s a classic. It’s a movie about a widow who is unable to find another suitor and becomes insane. Yeah I know nobody wants to see that.It is based on a Pulitzer winning broadway play.I know that makes it even worse. But it stars the greatest , most dashing , most enigmatic and most almost everything worth mentioning movie star of all times.

Marlon Brando plays an absolute jerk . He thinks everything a woman owns belongs to the husband , punches his pregnant wife , rapes his wife’s sister and sends her to a mental institution. Yet your girlfriend will be getting romantic ideas about him for quite  a number of  days after watching him in this movie. continue reading…

Ah the good old days of doordarshan. Their handful of songs that were circulating in a loop in chitrahar and rangoli. The charming jingle of chutti-chutti..The two or three series they bought from Discovery.Their handful of movies which again were circulating in a loop. And since as I kid I was wide eyed and curious – I would eagerly watch the re-runs. continue reading…
